Juvenile Bald Eagle

Juvenile Bald Eagle

I saw a few eagles today. I saw this juvenile bald eagle here in DE and a few mature ones in MD near routes 301 and 50. I love this time of year.

American Woodcock

I saw an American Woodcock today. It was walking in the snow and had a really unusual looking way of walking. It’s body would bounce as it walked but it’s head would look like it was holding still. As i got closer it started to flick it’s tail up and toward me. I’ve never seen anything like that. I looked it up on http://www.whatbird.com and looking at the map, it looks like they should be south of here this time of year. Maybe he wants to play in the snow.

Odessa Red Fox

My wife found this Red Fox while we were driving east of Odessa. It didn’t run away when we stopped and I was able to get a bunch of pictures. It looked like it was hunting rodents near a ditch.

Barn Owl

Barn Owl

There have been sightings of snowy owls in DE lately so for the past two days I have been looking for them. While following my cousin through some woods we came upon an area with owl droppings. In the trees above us an owl took off but didn’t fly too far away. We searched the area and saw it a few more times. I was able to get a picture but it wasn’t very clear. You can see it is a barn owl though and not a snowy owl. What a beautiful site it was.

Gadwall

I have not seen any Gadwall ducks for about a year. Today there was about a dozen of them close enough for pictures in Shearness Pool. There were Mallards and Green Wing Teal near by also.

Today my son and I were moving stuff around so we could make a sand box in our back yard. We found a bunch of bugs and things crawling around and ladybugs were landing on us too. There were Centipedes, Sow Bug Killer spiders, Slugs, and what I always called Rolly Pollys. The roly polys are also called pill bugs, wood lice, sow bugs and I have also heard them called armadillo bugs.

Early Snow and Birds

IMG_8715_MerlinIMG_8873

Today it snowed a little which was cool because it doesn’t seem to snow this early in the season too often. The snow didn’t accumulate or last long but it was pretty. It was fun to watch the Avocets and seagulls flying around and raptors were everywhere. Just as the snow was ending I found an area I have never been in before because a gate was left open that is normally locked. I drove in and lucky for me I saw a Merlin perched on an old utility pole. He didn’t mind me at all and I finally got a picture of a merlin. After that I went to another area close by and took this Mallard picture. I try to get pictures of everything in nature in Delaware but it seems that most of my pictures are of birds. I love birds so I guess I’m glad we have such a large bird population.

Horned Lark

I mentioned in an earlier entry that the horned larks would be around soon. Well they are here! The only way I can seem to find them is to drive along the roads that are next to fields that have been recently harvested or planted. While I’m driving I look for birds that jump up and make short flight before landing back in the same field. You really need to watch where they land because they are REALLY hard to see once they are back on the ground. Today I was near Harrington when I saw the familiar flight pattern of the larks. Lucky for me one of them didn’t fly too far away. I took a couple pics and I was hoping to get a close up but I couldn’t get that close. So here is what I was able to get. This one doesn’t have big “horns” yet but you can see where it gets it’s name from.
I added the snowy picture on 1/21/14.The larks were staying close to the road so I could get a closer look today.
