Short-Eared Owl

March 1, 2014

Short-eared Owl

I love owls and today I was lucky enough to get to see this owl three times. Each time I saw it I was able to get a better picture. This picture is when he let us get close for just a minute. I looked it up when I got home and it is a short-eared owl. Looking through the lens and seeing those big yellow eyes was a real thrill.

  1. What a great photo! I haven’t had much luck finding owls, but I’m sure I don’t know what to look for!! After your tips, I finally found some Horned Larks, and now see them fairly regularly. So what are your tips for finding owls??

  2. Well this one was completely by luck but I have found them by looking around under trees on the ground for bird droppings with what looks like mouse fur in it. Some times I will find their feathers under areas they frequent as well. I usually look in areas that I have heard them before. I’m still not real good at finding them yet but as I get better there will be more pictures for sure.
